Our Proud Heritage

The Cuthbert United Methodist Church is rich in history.  Shady Grove was our first church, built of logs in 1843.  The late Reverend Frank Gilmore described it as "picturesque, a place of whispering pines and fragrant magnolias, where bay trees and honeysuckle breathed their perfume...surely God was in this place."

A bronze marker is now placed in Greenwood Cemetery at the location of Shady Grove Methodist Church.  After only seven years, the congregation outgrew its log structure.  In 1851, where our church now stands, a white framed church was built in the style of the period.  It was brick veneered in 1917.  In 1947, the Alice B. Bussey Fellowship Hall was added and in 1956 the Fillingame Sunday School Annex was built.
